I Tried Scrubbing My Sandals
People have strong feelings about feet or anything feet-adjacent, so if this post makes you recoil and run away from the blog screaming, I understand. But I've studied and prepped for this post for so long because...well, for one thing, I think it's interesting. More importantly, though, I absolutely love this pair of shoes, and I think they deserve all of my preservation efforts.
This is a pair of Dr. Martens sandals. I can't remember the exact style name because I purchased them back in graduate school; the Doc Martens website was having a sale one January to clear out summer styles, and I happened to snag the last pair of these sandals in my size for $35. I do recall the style name starting with an A, and it may have been something like "Alena" or "Alia." Regardless, I bought them cheap eons ago and they no longer produce this style.
Did I mention that I purchased these back in graduate school? Yeah, these guys are at least 5 years old. That's a long lifespan for shoes, especially sandals! So given that this pair has lived a long, healthy life, why bother trying to scrub the mucky things out?
Ignore the absolutely vile footbeds on these for a second and just look at the rest of the shoe. I've worn these for a good 8 months of the year every year I've had them, and they've been almost everywhere. They've visited cities, flown on planes, taken long walks through the park, and clocked in at numerous grocery stores and restaurants. Yet despite all of that, if you ignore the footbed, they look practically brand new. The rubber and stitching on the bottom don't have any obvious scratches, discoloration, or scuffs. And even though I've worn these on rainy days a-plenty, somehow, the plaid fabric is spotless.
Now, I want to point out that I treat all of my Docs with their Protector Spray, which helps prevent damage from water and sunlight. (Note: I also like their Wonder Balsam, and I use that and the spray on the few leather goods I own.) Still, it's unusual for a pair of sandals to look this damn spotless after so many years and so much wear.
Except for those footbeds. Those dirty, icky, footbeds, the footbeds that not only have a clear indent of my feet due to constant wear, but also rock an unsightly layer of caked-on grime. I couldn't take it anymore: these shoes deserve better. Unaware of the existence of actual footbed cleaner, I spent months scouring websites, magazines, and shoe boxes to figure out the best method for cleaning these guys up.
The most recommended tools were a toothbrush, some water with dish soap, and a damp paper towel or soft cloth. All of these items were readily available to me, including extra toothbrushes; my family always has a pack of the cheapo "6 for $1" brushes under the sink for scrubbing grout in the bathroom or on the windowsills. I put a few drops of Palmolive in a cup, added some lukewarm water, set my sandals on the side porch, and started scrubbing out my shoes. I initially used a back-and-forth motion, but quickly switched to small circles, which worked even better.
After scrubbing just the heel portion of one sandal, I pulled up all of the dirt you see in the above picture. I was actually stunned that this was working and that my footbeds were that scummy. I mean, subconsciously, I had to know, but...seeing it was weird.
After finished the left shoe, I ran a damp paper towel all over the footbed to rinse off the soap and pull up a little extra dirt. I also got a fresh cup of soapy water to prep for the right shoe.
Comparison photo time! The shoe on the left went through one round of gentle scrubbing, while the shoe on the right was untouched. Was the soaped-up footbed the soft, creamy beige shade it was when I first pulled my sandals from their box? Hell no, but it was clearly cleaner. Actually, I think this photo doesn't truly exemplify how much cleaner the shoe on the left is: the indents from my feet make some areas more shadowy than others, as does the fact that the bed is still a bit damp. The one bummer was that I couldn't remove the sap stain from the left heel, but hey, small victories!
I finished both shoes and left them on the side porch to dry out of direct sunlight. After they'd dried several hours later,I did another round of scrubbing and drying. At the end of the day, I was suitably impressed with how much nicer the footbeds looked and how much cleaner they felt. Again, the shadows play some tricks here, and they're not like new, anyway, but you can see in this photograph that they look leagues better:
Two final notes: first, scrubbing the footbeds of your sandals can cause some texture changes. A few articles mentioned using a bit of sandpaper, very gently, on the soles to soften up the texture. I did notice that my sandals were a tad rougher after cleaning at the very ends, but because I don't actually feel those parts of the sole when I'm wearing the shoes, I let them be. Second, I did not patch test this cleaning method because I figured that if it ruined my sandals, I still got 5+ years of awesome sandal-age for a measly $35. If you have a newer or more expensive pair of sandals, however, I'd definitely recommending testing this on a small portion of the footbed first. Better yet, you could contact the company to see what cleaning method they recommend.
Sandpaper and patch testing aside, I don't think this is something I would do constantly. It only restores the shoe so much, and I do think it would thin out your footbed over time. But as a yearly upkeep step? It's absolutely doable, especially if you have an old knock-around pair of sandals you love as much as I love these Docs.

And they're off!

You might not recall what happened with these beautiful boots, so I'll refresh your memory: I ordered them from Bloomingdale's almost 3 years ago. When I called customer service and asked if the listed sizes were the original UK sizes or the US equivalents, they assured me that they were listed in the US equivalent, so I ordered a size 8. Docs are always a bit stiff and heavy when you first get them because they need broken in, so I wore them around the house a few times, assuming that they were fitting awkwardly because they hadn't been stretched out. Then I checked the tongue and discovered that they were a UK 8, which means they're a US 10. Bloomingdale's customer service told me I couldn't return them because they'd been "worn." So I kept them and wore them anyway, using two or even three pairs of socks to keep them tight on my feet.
I haven't been wearing them much for the past 6 months, though, partially because of work, but mostly because...well, they don't fit. No matter how much I love the style or how great they look with my outfits, they just aren't the right size.
So when my friend popped in for a visit, fawned over them, and tried them on for funsies...I decided it was time to let them go, provided my friend promised to actually wear them. (They weren't cheap, after all, but they were much-loved and well-cared for!) Here's hoping they'll get more love from someone whose foot actually fits them.
I'm considering saving up for a replacement pair, or for the classic 1460 boots in black. Who knows? Maybe I'll get a full-time position or a bonus in the future. :)

Bad Outfit #20: Post-Mommy-Makeover Mall Run
My mother is a truly beautiful woman, inside and out. But for the past 5 or so years, she hasn't paid much attention to herself. She didn't wear makeup, she'd buy new clothes for herself and take them right back the next day, and she spent most of her weekends cleaning and doing favors for the rest of the family. Sunday, however, was a little different: she bought new clothes and proudly showed them off to everybody, she went to a knitting class, she didn't clean a single thing, and--to my great shock--she dumped out her small container of ancient makeup and asked me, "What do I do?"
Now that my mom has a quick 5-minute routine she can do before she goes to work in the mornings, she needs some fresh stuff and an organizer! My dad chipped in, and I got my mom this cute little acrylic stand at Wal-mart. You'll also notice a few things that were once mine in there: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy (which she just LOVED), Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes (I'll probably repurchase this for myself at some point), and--no, you're not seeing things--my Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Moist Glow in Tansoleil. It just looked so pretty on her NC20-25 skin that I figured I'd just borrow it from her when I needed it. :) I also got her a brand new lash curler (a green Cynthia Rowley one, just cause green is her favorite color) and a darker, slightly more yellow shade of her Clinique foundation to sample.
But, um, since we were out, I got myself a few things...
...plus a few clothing items. All of them are black, and 3 of the 4 have skulls on them.
And for the record, I gave my mom my extra tube of Lipstick Queen Jean Queen, which she wore throughout the day and kept in her purse...seriously, guys, that lipstick is just so wonderful for so many skintones and age groups. I'm wearing it in these OOTD pictures, too! (Which, by the way, this outfit was far more flattering in real life, but we were kinda in a hurry to get some food in to our gaping maws, so we only took two pictures.) This was a rushed-but-comfortable outfit that I put together to showcase my beloved Triumph boots AND cut down on the sheer amount of black I wear. Y'know, cause there's a colorful coat. And some brown. I TRIED, OKAY?!

I also wanted to let you guys know that I'm totally, honestly working on a bunch of reviews, mostly of foundations. To be honest, I'm a little burnt out from months of hunting for a dry-skin friendly, super-pale foundation that sits nicely on my skin, so I'll probably go over those in a slew of mini-reviews. I know it's not as thorough as my usual foundation reviews, but...you guys understand, right? And I've got a few other new products that I'll probably shove together in another set of mini-reviews, like Rouge Bunny Rouge Sea of Clouds illuminator and a L'oreal liquid liner.
...yeeeeah, I've got a lot to do. Ignore my scary desk o' samples and, instead, enjoy this cute picture of my kitty re-experiencing the smells and sounds of the outside world!

Bad Outfit #19: Still In Black
Hey, at least I'm honest about having a uniform! (Don't worry; I'll post some more colorful stuff soon.)
So spring is finally on its way to Pennsylvania, which means I can start wearing my light-weight jackets and my skirts! But of course, it being more than a little chilly out, I need a pair of leggings on top of that. Sometimes I consider selling my Dr. Marten 1B60s, since they're technically too big for me, but gah, I love them with skirts! What do you guys think--should I sell them at half-price on my blog and get a pair that actually fits me? Or should I cling to my precious babies forever and ever?

Bad Outfit #18: Loungewear
It's a day off in a 40-hour work week that consists of what I call the Western Pennsylvanian Hat Trick from Hell: there's a holiday coming up, there's snow, and I work nothing but weekend and rush hour shifts. Times like this make working in a grocery store even more frustrating. It's Pennsylvania! IT'S GONNA SNOW! And if you somehow actually get snowed in for a day, are you REALLY going to die without those four gallons of milk? I doubt it.
So the store was non-stop yesterday, and I was so stiff and sore after 8 hours of bagging hams and listening to pointless bitching that I could barely move. My day off just HAD to be an anti-social, anti-function relaxation day, meaning I muted my phone, ignored my e-mail, and waited a few hours before doing my makeup. And of course, I needed very comfortable clothes. Stretch fabric and over-sized shirts, here I come!
I made sure to eat a super-decadent lunch before brushing my teeth and slapping on some makeup. I've become obsessed with some of the offerings on the grocery store's antipasto bar, and these stuffed banana papers are probably my favorite! They're full of cheese and prosciutto. *drools* And to finish it off, I had a little piece of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
Sometimes I think I should've been a food blogger...
ANYWAY! I decided to a do a dark eyes/soft pinks look today. Nothing too exciting, but my clothes were so obviously a version of my usual "uniform" (something loose, something fitted, mostly black, boots, no jewelry) that I felt the need to mix it up a little. My apologies about the little red spots under my brows; they needed plucked something awful. I realize I need to add a bit more white to my foundation to get a better match...Toto, I don't think we're in N10 territory anymore. :(

Bad Outfit #15: Oh Beautiful for Spangled Skulls
I'm officially kicking myself for not getting the t-shirt version of this tank-top. I LOVE this tank-top! It looks awesome, the size small shrunk down just right, and it feels soft and luxorious and I want to wear it with everything and gaaaaah! Maybe when I go back to TJ Maxx, I'll luck out, and there will be, like, 50. Because I just wanna fill my wardrobe with this stuff.
TANK TOP: The Class-Ic, found at TJ Maxx/Marshall's
LEGGINGS: Steve Madden
EARRINGS: Hot Topic; Jolliffe Jewelry
BOOTS: Dr. Marten's 1460
I also decided to test out MAC Candy Yum Yum today. It's truly neon, which means my family hates it and I want to bathe in it. The popular discourse is certainly true, though: the brightness can make it difficult for people who aren't at my level of crazy to wear, and it will accentuate every flake and line on your lips. I actually exfoliated, moisturized, and primed my lips before I applied it, and there are STILL a few flakies. But whatevs. I'll bear with that for a neon lipstick.

Bad Outfit #14: "I was a target 'cause I'm a fashion misfit."
Contrary to what some of my photos suggest, I do wander out of my house looking like I do. And while I appreciate a person with wonky tastes, even if they aren't my own tastes, most people think that anything different or unusual is worthy of mockery. This is especially true if they're in a group--actually, it's almost always only true if they're in a group; I can't remember the last time a solitary person made fun of me for my clothes or my makeup, but there have been plenty of days, including today, when a pack of people plucked up the courage to mock me. I'd like to say that it doesn't get to me when a group of self-absorbed teenagers shouts insults at me as I walk past them on my way to the park, but hey, it does. It hurts for a moment, but the way it really gets to me is that it gets me to wear what I want to wear more often, regardless of the consequences. If my clothes make me feel great, that's already fantastic...but if they make me feel great and prompt a strong reaction in other people, negative or otherwise, well, I'm just ecstatic.

Bad Outfit #13: Rushing to Dinner
Not crazy about the eye makeup I tested out today, but at least the outfit's suitably horrible! Wearing this for dinner and dishwasher shopping with the 'rents.

Did you notice my skin? I decided to try buffing MAC Face & Body in with the ELF powder brush for a change, and OH MY GOD. Amazing coverage and finish, but I only used half as much foundation! New favorite thing.
Although that also means a lot of wasted foundation. Eep.

Bad Outfit #11: Early Morning Walk
Okay, so it's not exactly an early morning walk outfit, since I don't roll out of bed before 9am unless I have to. That's my get-up-and-go time, though, the time when I actually like to wake up: some time between 9 and 10. Not too early, not too late...but I'm a night person. Anyway, here's what I wore to take a walk downtown. No makeup because A) I need to be a little more awake to blend blush, and B) if there's the possibility that I'm going to be sweating, I generally just stick to sunscreen for the sake of my skin.

Bad Outfits #9 and #10: Keeping the Essentials
I knew it was going to be a rainy, icky day, so I wanted to brighten it up by wearing...um, lots of black. But hey, I love black, I love fishnet, and I love Doc Martens, so it's a winning combination, right? I assumed I was going to go for a short walk and yoinked this on:
But then I realized it was still kind of Pennsylvania-warm-and-humid-and-sticky outside, and I was probably wearing a bit too much. (No, really!) I also decided that I really wanted to wear a dress and I really didn't want to deal with my hair. So I kept the essentials--black, Docs, fishnet--and switched out the rest. I'm actually surprised that this $5 dress went so well with that fishnet top; you can't even tell it's a separate piece!
Then I got back in to my pajamas to do work, only to find out that my services aren't exactly needed today. Ah, well. Such is life!

And a kind-of important note! I'm actually going to be in North Carolina for the next 10 days or so, so I won't be able to send out blogsale items and may be a bit delayed when it comes to responding to comments. I have a few posts queued up for when I'm gone, so the blog shouldn't be entirely blah and dead in my pseudo-absence. :)

Bad Outfit #8: Colorguard Crasher
My very dear friend invited me to check out his new group of colorguard girls, then dress up and mock Sarah Palin. Hey, I'm game! This wrap dress is from one of my favorite lines, Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten collection, which is unfortunately defunct (though you can still find a lot of Bitten pieces on eBay). It breaks my heart, because it's hard to find petite-friendly clothing that is also curve-friendly; most petite cuts assume you're very very thin or very very heavy. Bitten clothes were some of the first clothes to fit my short-but-curvy body. Better yet, they were affordable. I will beg Sarah Jessica Parker to bring this line back at another retailer until I'm blue in the face!
For the record, you can definitely class-up a wrap dress. If I wasn't going to stand for almost an hour in the sticky Pennsylvania air, I would've worn a pair of strappy sandals with a bit of a heel and a more neutral purse. But hey, I wanted comfort!

And of course, a huge thanks to the lovely ColorGuard gals who let me crash their very first show! :)
Just a final note before I close this post: Blogger seems to be having trouble posting my comments. I get notifications in my e-mail, but when I check the appropriate blog post to reply, nothing shows up. :/ So I'm not deleting your comments or ignoring you; I just literally can't see them! Hopefully I'll be able to figure out and solve the issue over the next few days.
See you in September!

Bad Outfit #6: Old Lady Skirt
I'm really big in to a lot of "old lady stuff," as my mom calls it, but only if I can mix it with things that are a little "edgier" and more "me." I dig doily-lace dresses over spiderweb fishnets, crop pants and slip-on shoes with a studded leather jacket, and of course, long printed skirts with big, butch boots. (Ok, so I like my big, butch boots with just about everything; that's beside the point.) I also decided to try something new with my eyeliner: no wings at the end, and I started it at the center of my eye instead of the inner corner. It certainly "alters" the shape of my eye a bit, but I still prefer my wings. :)
I was in a real hurry to get ready today, so I threw on some simple stuff and took a few quick pictures, hence the meh photo quality and bedhead brows--my apologies. Also, my face and the backs of my shoulders are quite dark versus the rest of me, and I think I'm just going to have to start whitening up my face with something closer to regular skintone, IE Missha Perfect Cover--MAC Face & Body is beautiful, but too sheer to really lighten up my face and make it match. Luckily, the disparity is not all that noticeable to the naked eye.

I also figured I'd show you a picture of my brand new work space. Now that my brother and sister are both back at school and I'm officially living at home, I have all of my stuff upstairs in my bedroom...for the first time in 6 years. After living out of boxes that're haphazardly stacked in the dining room and basement, this is downright surreal!

Bad Outfit #4(.5), FOTD, Empties, and a Mini-Absence
I find it difficult to use products up. It's not that I don't love my stuff and use it often, but rather, that I use so little of a product at one time that they just kind of...last a while. I have, however, checked up on my stash and plucked out a few items that I've managed to finish, or almost finish, over the past month. Obviously, I've gone through several jars of the Avon Nurtura face cream, which is my HG night cream; my current jar is the one I used to keep at Jessica's apartment and is already 2/3 of the way finished. My mini-Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour hand cream has been a favorite of mine and will probably be empty by the end of the week.
The eye cream sample was a sweet gift from an MUAer, but unfortunately, this particular product didn't impress me. The same goes for the rest of the products in this bunch...the Nivea Kiss of Moisture lip balm was probably my biggest disappointment, since people rave about it. It's not bad, just...not amazing. I've been keeping it on my desk and will def have it completely finished by the end of the month. I can't bring myself to use any more of the MAC Studio Tech foundation or the Korres lip butter in Jasmine, so I'm Back 2 MAC-ing the foundation and RAOKing the lip butter. And while I've never cared for most MAC Lustre lipsticks or glittery products, I DID manage to finish the MAC Stroke of Lust lipstick by using it as a lip, cheek, and brow highlight at guard and drag shows.
Not pictured, but worth mentioning, are my Prestige My Biggest Lashes mascara and Jordana Fabu-liner, which dried up last month after long and faithful service. Don't worry, they've been replaced. ;)
Now for my outfit and FOTD from this past weekend. As you can probably tell, I traipsed in to my brother's room and asked him to take a picture of "my entire outfit"...he only photographed the top half. T_T Luckily, the bottom half isn't anything new; this is actually a mid-calf dress I got from Forever 21, and I paired it with plain black leggings and my beloved Doc Marten 1B60 knee-high boots. Maybe you can't see the whole outfit, but you can see my stupid faces! :D
And for the face: my sister yoinked back her point-and-shoot for a night out, so I quickly took some webcam shots before heading out to see The Dark Knight Rises.
BASE: MAC Face & Body foundation in N1 + White, Clinique Airbrush concealer in 01 Fair, Skindinavia setting spray
EYES: Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Jordana Fabu-liner in Black, DiorShow Maximizer lash primer, Prestige My Biggest Lashes mascara, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers in Mink, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers in Tapestry Taupe, La Femme brow pencil in Taupe, Anastasia clear brow gel

And now for a quick bit of news: I'll actually be absent from blogging for most of the next 2 weeks. My boyfriend is flying in from North Dakota to visit, and I'm going to be a bit preoccupied showing him the sights and sounds. :) If I can find the time, I'll do a blog post about it!

Bad Outfit #3: Summer Viewing
When I say "summer viewing," I don't mean viewing art or nature. Unfortunately, I'm referring to a funeral viewing. Beyond being a bad outfit that does nothing for my munchkin figure (and I'm aware of that, I promise, and I love it regardless, no lies), it may also strike some as a very odd outfit for a funeral. Where I'm from, however, it is not unusual to wear business casual types of clothing to viewings, especially in the hot, humid summer months, though of course, you always dress up for the actual funeral. I also wore this skirt and these boots with a more "flattering" taupe tank top and fitted jean jacket for my friend Laurel's birthday, but dear God, I was NOT gonna wear the jacket today.
TOP & SKIRT: thrift store finds
BOOTS: Dr. Marten's 1914 Triumph, Brown Massai
JEWELRY: none in the pictures, but I put on a necklace from Jolliffe Jewelry before leaving.
My makeup was essentially my standard "no makeup makeup" with some minor changes: I added more (but still subtle) color with the Revlon Just Bitten balm stain in Honey and the ELF Essential liquid eyeliner in Ash, and I used the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Pearl instead of MAC Pearl CCB.
