Pinterest Inspiration #3: Orange Lipstick
Orange is a taboo color in our house. My mother is a fan of nude pinks and "girly" makeup; she'll occasionally say she likes my red lipsticks, but only "for photos," ie, "Well, it would like nice in a picture!" My dad is not afraid to tease me for looking like a clown. And my siblings aren't exactly known for looking at fashion magazines.
Still, I wanted to give this popular spring look a try. I didn't just want to do a typical pin-up look with orange lipstick instead of red, or the apparently-uber-modern "lipstick and nothing else" sort of look. So I flipped through Pinterest for inspiration. These two images caught my eye because they focused on the orange lip, no doubt, but balanced it with soft washes of orange on the rest of the face and a good, strong brow:
It's definitely not my favorite color to wear. I think it would look much better on a medium or dark skintone, or perhaps in a more blotted down, messy look. I'm going to keep the star player--MAC Neon Orange--around, but mostly just to mix with reds or to neon-ize Lady Danger.

I think you should "only" wear orange lips, it contrasts your blue eyes so beautifully! I love it that you don't choose pin-up look with it, I think it would be a bit dated. This one, with defined brow, is quite modern and fresh.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I didn't do the cat-eye, either; I'm starting to prefer that with lighter, softer lipsticks. Maybe because I'm getting older? I dunno.
DeleteI'm not sure if it's because you mostly wear pinks on the blog, but I prefer you in pink lipstick. This still looks good on you; it's just very different! I actually bought my first orange-red lipstick last weekend. My husband said he didn't like it, but I thought it looked fab! Who knows how it actually looked . . . lol.
ReplyDeleteHoly crud, I really do wear mostly pinks in my FOTDs here! LOL! It's funny, because in real life I tend to favor reds. I'm just less likely to do a FOTD post with them on because the look doesn't change too much, y'know? I'm pretty boring in my old(er) age. :)
DeleteI wonder if the Revlon classic "Orange Flip" might not suit your skintone better? My mother loved it in the 70's. I bought the reissue a while back and it's not quite as 70's-matte as I remember, but a more wearable shade than what I can recall. Really pretty, in fact. I also tried a wonderfully cheap Essence color recently--sort of a semisheer orange/peach shimmery summer lipstick--and it's surprisingly good. My eyes are hazel/green, but my coloring's very much like yours... :-)
ReplyDeleteGoogled Orange Flip and I just LOVE the color--it's got more red in it, which seems to be more flattering--but it's unfortunately in the Moon Drops formula. I really dislike the smell and taste of those. :( I'll keep an eye out for the Essence shade, though, and thank you for the recommendations!
