Beauty Roulette: Second Update

As you can see, I have obtained a ton of stuff over the past 2 months, some of which isn't even pictured here. I have tons to try, photograph, and write about, so I'm going on a kinda-sorta no buy. I'm allowing myself to use store credit or gift cards and replace any finished staples until the end of the spring semester (May).

I'm also using this really beautiful notebook my mother gave me to keep track of my purchases, list my lemmings, and record my progress as I attempt to finish or partially use numerous products.  And why do I need to record my progress? Well, I'm prepping for another round of Beauty Roulette! I used the free Randomizer app for android to pick my rules for this round. I'm not getting paid to say that, by the way--I just think it's a really useful app!

Before we go on to this season's challenges, let's see how I did with the previous round of products.

Finish a body lotion, finish a deluxe sample, and use half of any pencil were major successes. I completed Haus of Gloi's Body Emulsion in Vice and the Hourglass Film Noir mascara sample within a month or so, and I finished well over half of the Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil. I selected MAC Blankety lipstick for my give something a second chance challenge, but that lipstick really is too gray on me. I depotted the product in to a little jar, sent it to a friend, and kept the empty tube for Back 2 MAC.

My one failure was use half of any lipstick, partially because I selected these items in fall and I don't really wear a lot of lipstick in November, or when I'm traveling like I did this past December. Honestly, when it gets very cold out and I spend a lot of time on campus (aka Land of the Forced Air Heating), I stick to tinted balm.

Here's what I rolled for round 2, and the products I selected!

Finish Any Product - My top choice for this category was my MAC Ruby Woo lipstick. While it's a much-loved classic, I've come to prefer Stila's liquid lipstick in Beso, and I really think it's time to retire this super similar shade of red. I decided to add on my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz because there's maybe an inch of product left, and while it's a decent product, I think my Shu Uemura pencil is still top dog.

Use Half of a Lipstick - I'm guessing this will be tough for me again, so I chose an option I think I will go through relatively quickly: ELF's Gotta Glow Lip Tint. This is basically a tinted balm that adjusts color based on how much you apply, how warm your lips are, your skin's pH...you get the gist.

Show Something More Love - I love the Chanel Illusion d'Ombre cream shadows, but because I'm lazy about shadow and because they're so sparkly, I don't wear them often. I've decided to wear them a few more times before passing them off to a more loving home; heck, "that weird professor lady" can probably get away with shimmery lids at 9am!

Give Something Another Chance - I had high hopes for the NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation in Siberia, but after wearing it 2 or 3 times, I wasn't wowed and I set it off to the side. I've made a few skincare changes, though, that might alter how heavier bases sit on my skin, so I decided this puppy deserved another chance.

Compare Two Products, Purge One - I'm constantly on the quest for the very best sunscreens, especially now that my former Holy Grail from Shiseido is too dry for my face. I've liked, but haven't loved, the Isehan Perfect Strong Moisture Sunkiller from Japan, and I haven't tested the Blue Lizard Face sunscreen yet. Here's hoping I can find a new Holy Grail!

  1. You did really well on your goals, woohoo! I like how your project also includes selecting items for purging - no point forcing yourself using something that's not a favorite anymore.

    1. I think having a variety of goals is what keeps me interested. I love Project Pans (been reading your posts lately, actually!), but if my only goal was to use up 5 or 10 or 15 or whatever things, I think I'd get bored or frustrated. Allowing myself to just use half or to examine a product more closely, for instance, really helps! :)

  2. You're herecomesbadnews on reddit right? I recognized the items you own on your inventory spreadsheet, lol.

Good luck with the panning! I can't believe how much of Ruby Woo you've used. The only red I used really frequently was NARS Dragon Girl and after like 10+ uses I didn't even have to sharpen it yet!!! How do you do it?

    1. Yup, that's me! :) I think I go through lipsticks when they're my best color option--in this case, Ruby Woo was my best super matte true red. I also tend to reapply at least once during the day!
