Lipstick Diaries #1: MAC Lady Danger and Hourglass Canvas
In my current quest to reduce my stash to stuff I well and truly love and will use on a regular basis, I am going to attempt to go through my lipsticks, one by one, and photograph them to figure out what flatters me. I'm not 100% sure if I'll have the willpower or the wherewithall to do that, but here's hoping!
First up, MAC Lady Danger. It's obvious why this shade is a cult classic: I haven't found too many other matte warm reds that compare in terms of sheer oomph. At the risk of sounding like a beauty magazine ("Spend an hour doing your hair and another hour messing it up, cause that's chic!"), this is one of the most modern, uber-cool shades of lipstick I own. But the thing is...I don't think it flatters me that much, at least in pictures. When I wear it, I can't stop staring at it, and it's an absolute attention-getter. Here, though? Not so sure. Comment and let me know, aight?
Next, Hourglass Canvas. This is one of the Opaque Rogue Liquid Lipsticks, which I really enjoy for their longevity and pigmentation. It's also one of the very few nudes I own. My mom loves this one every time because it's not bright, but it's also clearly there; it's not non-existent the way some neutrals are. However, Canvas self-eliminated itself from my collection: my tube is almost empty and I can't get any more out. D: While I really enjoy this lipstick, I can't help thinking that I need something a shade or two lighter and the slightest bit softer to truly flatter my skintone.
NOTE: I'll be traveling throughout the rest of June and most of July. Several posts have been queued up to fill my absence, but I may be slow answering comments and emails.

I think both of these really suit you, actually. I know what you mean by trying to figure out the most flattering shades for your complexion, but sometimes when you really love a color, it doesn't matter all that much if it's the most flattering shade on the planet - well, unless it's completely out of tune, that is :)
ReplyDeleteMy problem, I think, is that I'm rarely satisfied with a nude-ish lipstick (nude by pale standards, that is), and when I finally find a color I like...I hate the formula. Too Faced Melted Peony is the best example: perfect color, shitty formula.
DeleteI think they both look great in the photos, too! Particularly Lady Danger. It's a nice contrast to your skin and you look like you're glowing.
ReplyDeleteI jacked up my blush in the Lady Danger FOTD, but this too shall pass. XD
DeleteI realized the other day that I actually have more warm red lipsticks than cool ones. I know that cool reds flatter me more, but warm reds feel more modern, playful, and casual. I actually gave away three of my cool reds last month when I noticed that I hadn't worn any of them in a year. There's no point in forcing yourself to wear more "flattering" colors if they don't make you happy.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, I think Lady Danger looks great on you, and it makes your eyes look so blue!
I really do need to just buckle down and get a deep blue-based red, probably MAC Dubonnet. I used to wear them all the time, but I've gotten Hella obsessed with bright pinks and warm reds over the past few years.
DeleteI they they both look great on you.
ReplyDeleteThat's kind; thank you.
DeleteThis exact thing happens to me with Lady Danger and Revlon's Fire and Ice, too. I am a pale brunette around the ΝW 10-15 category and I love those warm reds so much. I too, like you, believe that they don't look all that flattering in pictures. But, at the end of the day, who cares? I feel great when I wear them. I only have Lady Danger for a year and a half and it's almost gone. I feel empowered wearing it and I believe that it pairs wonderfully with my brown eyes and hair. I get most compliments for MAC's sheen supreme in Impressive and MAC's Crosswires. Still I love reds the most.
ReplyDeleteRight, I just wanna keep it cause I love it!
