Inspired by The L Word, season 1
There are a lot of problems with The L Word, most of which have already been outlined in gory detail by impressive scholarly articles. It presents a semi-mythical Lesbian LA, a land where nobody wears a bra and everyone is a size 2 femme, a place where only a fraction of an incredibly diverse community's population is portrayed at all, let alone in a positive light. And by the time you get halfway through the series, most of the characters have gone from well-written and interesting to almost exhausting caricatures.
But I still admire and respect the series for doing a few things--making an oft ignored subculture the subject of a major television show and proving to curious outsiders that yes, lesbians do have "real" sex, to name two. And of course, I dig the makeup.
It's unfortunately impossible to locate much information about what was used; the most I found was that they used Laura Mercier products on a number of the stars. This makes sense: the makeup on the show is primarily of the "barely there" sort, with glowing skin, soft swatches of blush, and dewy-but-not-wet lips. It was pretty tough to pull off, given my heavy hand and the incomparable beauty of women like Mia Kirshner, but I think I'm about 90% there!
