One of my favorite things to do when I re-watch television shows or movies is keep an eye out for beauty sightings: literally, when a recognizable beauty product pops up and makes me go, "Hey hey hey! That's such-and-such a product from this-or-that company!" I actually started taking screencaps of this kind of stuff with Sex and the City, but decided to start my blog posts with a series that was ripe for the picking: RuPaul's Drag Race. Because it's the season I just finished re-watching for the umpteenth time, I'll start with season 2.
First off, I'm glad that Drag Race explained what "cooking" (or "microwaving," if you use a really fast, slap-dash approach) is: it's when a drag queen lets the makeup sit on her face for a while so that her skin heats it up and makes it easier to blend. A lot of people use "you look like a drag queen" as an insult because they associate drag style with something that's gaudy, over-the-top and unblended, like the "raw" faces you see below, but the little tidbits that RDR provides for newbies are helping to change that.
NYX was the official sponsor of seasons 2 and 4, but clearly these ladies--Jujubee and Pandora Boxx--love their MAC powders! Glancing at the compacts and considering the time when this season was filmed, I'd guess that this is Studio Fix powder.
I love NYX lip products, but unfortunately, I couldn't pick up on what lipsticks these lovely ladies were using. Pandora most likely wrote her goodbye message with one of the NYX round lipsticks. The shot of a multitude of extra-gorgeous lipsticks actually makes me think of MAC lipsticks--a hold-over stock image from the first season, which was sponsored by MAC?--but I've been told that it's unlikely that the editing was that sloppy, and that they are possibly an older formulation of the NYX black label lipsticks.
I noticed Jujubee using this brown pencil on her brows a lot. Some people have said it's a MAC pencil, and the writing is reminiscent, but it's too hard to see, and it could be a NYX product that I just haven't used.
It ain't NYX, but it is an old drag queen trick: blocking your eyebrows out with glue stick and concealer!
And since we featured the lovely Jessica Wild in that last image, here's a shot of her patting loose red glitter on top of her lipstick:
Tatiana using another drag queen staple: false lashes! Interestingly enough, it looks like she applies both sets of lashes at the same time--now that takes skill and practice!
And finally, some images of Tyra using liquid liner to cut her crease. I can't tell what brand it is, as they never show the bottle, but in the first shot, the shape of the lid is quite similar to that of the classic NYX liquid liner.
That's all for now! If your eagle eyes can pinpoint what specific products/shades are, or if you have any favorite makeup sightings from RuPaul's Drag Race, season 2, please let us know in the comments!
ooh ooh ooh! i do this too; watching TV shows and pointing out makeup prods i'm familiar with in my head. i was absolutely shocked watching america's next top model a few seasons back when i saw a coastal scents 88 palette lovingly laid out on the artist's table full of makeup!
